Central to Saegusa’s work is the concept of mono no aware —the bittersweet awareness of the transience of things. Her characters often gaze away from the viewer, toward windows, old photographs, or fading flowers. In The Garden of Unspoken Things , a recurring image is a child’s hand pressing against a rain-streaked window, the outside world blurred into watercolor-like abstraction.
