The Silmarillion is a book written by J.R.R. Tolkien, first published posthumously in 1977 by his son Christopher Tolkien. The book is a compilation of stories and legends that Tolkien created to flesh out the history of Middle-earth, a fictional world he invented. The stories in The Silmarillion take place in the First Age of Middle-earth, a time when the Elves and Valar (angelic beings) shaped the world and its destiny.
